About the book

Alcohol rarely arrives as a problem. It arrives as "just one", a celebration, a way to fit in or to unwind after work. This book looks at how that ordinary start can slowly turn into dependence, and why people often feel in control long after drinking has started to control them.

Drawing on decades working in healthcare as a nurse and on what he has seen in family and community life, Mbatia writes about social pressure, drinking to escape, "functional" drinking, the effects on the brain, body, mental health and family, and why quitting feels so hard. The second half turns to rebuilding: replacing the habit, learning to say no, staying sober around people who drink, and healing as a family.

The tone is honest without shaming anyone. The book ends with a Reflection and Recovery Workbook of self-assessment questions for readers and families.
